These books have just the right amount of suspense and great characters for newly independent readers. We could have seen Alex face off against new kinds of criminals that are worse and see him go through some life changing decisions. First few chapters deal with New York and the transition, with the remainder of the story set in the 'old' west. So Dara heads there with Justin and Julie to find him. MacFarlane’s search for the meaning of wildness is interesting and thought-provoking but, for me, the wonder of the book lies in MacFarlane’s ability to feel the landscape and, through the beauty of his writing, to communicate those feelings to his reader. No previous account has achieved this depth and quality of analysis. I recommend everything he writes. Janna's heart is for children to know and love God's Word.
